An Interactive Movie Experience with Winema

When I received the invite for the launch of SM Cinema’s Winema, I thought that the 4D movie experience that I grew up with in Enchanted Kingdom is finally in the metro! My mind went haywire with all the thoughts of 4D – moving chairs, impact of water spraying, smoke effects and more. I also received inputs that the groundbreaking innovation – as they call it, will be used in the movie Iron Man 2. So I was like, wow! Iron Man 2 in itself is already cool, put that in 4D… so what will moviegoers get? Total awesomeness!

Finally the day of the launch came, that was yesterday, April 22, 2010 before the launch, we were shown trailers of movies that we thought will be used for the Winema experience – and we were like, “This is gonna be really cool!”

So we were surprised when the project was launched with two games, Boink Out and Power Catcher. It turned out that Winema will only turn the movie audience into human joysticks through interactive cinema gaming.

Boink Out

Power Catcher

Using a motion sensitive camera, movie watchers will maneuver the character on screen left and right by waiving their arms in the air according to the direction they want it to follow. Winema will run for 3 minutes so the movie audience needs to accumulate as much points under the given time.

Just a note, Winema is FREE and the movie audience that gets to beat the high score will receive a prize for each audience member – as to how and what, that they didn’t tell us.

Advertisers can customize the games as it could allow different brands or products to be included in the play; or they can choose their own concept.

As they say, Winema will ‘break the ice’ – it’s like a commercial, a breather, a game that will put the audience in the mood for the movie.

It did not turn out the way we all expected it to be – because we were expecting it to be a 4D experience but no doubt we did have fun shouting weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

In fairness to SM Cinema, the invite didn’t say anything about it being 4D – just “interactive”.

Winema is initially available in SM Megamall Cinema 1 but will soon be launched in other branches in a few months.

Shut Up. Kick Ass.

Tired of watching X-Men, Justice League and uhm…Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Well then, watch out as a new breed of superheroes will be revealed this summer!

Aaron Johnson plays Dave Lizewski, a teen geek and comic book fanatic who braved this way and went under disguise as a superhero – without superpowers at that! In his green and yellow suit he prowls the city to fight crime together with highly trained father and daughter tandem Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) and there’s another fledgling superhero who joins them – Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

KICK-ASS is based on the comic book of the same name written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita, Jr. When Mark pitched his story to Matthew Vaughn, director of the blockbuster film Stardust, the latter was impressed and immediately agreed to direct the movie and write the screenplay with Jane Goldman, also his co-writer of Stardust.  Vaughn and Goldman were keen that their movie wouldn’t simply be a carbon copy of Millar’s book hence the back-story of Nicolas Cage’s character Big Daddy.

Kick Ass opens on April 16, 2010.

Are you ready for an Interactive Cinema movie experience?

This April, SM Cinema will launch the first ever interactive cinema in the Philippines.

According to wikipedia, Interactive cinema tries to give the audience an active role in the showing of movies.

SM Cinema tells us to “prepare for the most interactive cinema experience ever.” And this experience will involve something dynamic and playful, insinuating hand waving motions.

The movie Kinoautomat by Czechoslovakian director Raduz Cincera presented in the Czech Pavilion in Expo ’67 in Montreal is considered to be the first cinema-like interactive movie.

This project is to be launched late April at the Digital Theater of SM Megamall, in time for the series of blockbuster movies this summer.
